Week 15 Project 5

1. Picasso uses alot of value in the shading between the white, grey and black. Alos contrast between the white alnd black.  There is also alot of line and shape throughout the piece.

2. It looks like alot of shading and outlining went into this piece as well as filling in different hsapes with different values.  It looks like there is alot of death going on so it was probably made during a bad time in society.

3.  This piece was created during a time of war specifically during the Nazi Germany regime.  It represents the brutality of war especially on innocent lives.  It was created in reaction to a German bombing.

4/5.  The work does a good job of representing what Picasso was trying to represent.  Before even looking up what the backround info on this painting was I knew that it was trying to represent a bad event or time in society and death.  The different shades of black and grey help give it a more dark mood.

Reflectons of AED200

1. My expectations were to learn about different types of art as well as the different things that make them up.  I also expected to learn about different artists.  Yes my expectations were met.

2. Art is an expression or representation of something or idea.  Art can be many different things and is all around us.

3. I did not really have one favorite artist at the time but if I had to pick one now it would be Ryan Kirby a wildlife artist.

4. The online course was not bad at all and I am actually taking another this summer.

Self Portrait

1. I chose these inspiration pictures because they looked interesting for self portraits.
2. I just used what I had available here at home and chose to paint it.
3. Getting some of the shades in the picture was difficult but i wasn't going for a painting that looked life like.
4. It represents me because it is a picture of me.
5. Some elements i included are color, contrast.
6. Yes I enjoyed working on this project.
7. I think it came out nice.

Final Project

Picking a theme for my art exhibition was relatively easy for me as my passion is the outdoors and hunting/fishing.  I chose to do and exhibition on wildlife and other outdoor art.  I named my exhibition The Great Outdoors.  I searched online for different wildlife artists as well as some landscapes I liked.  There are some really awesome and talanted wildlife artists.  They do an awesome job of capturing alot of these animals in their natural habitat and some of the paintings are hard to tell the difference between whether its a picture or not.  This was an interesting project and helped realize how many great wildlife artists there are.

The lowdown on lowbrow
Pop surrealism or lowbrow's influences include comic books, movies, rock music etc. Through interviews and examples this video talks about Lowbrow’s evolution. It is in relation to Abstract Expressionism. Artists talked about include Robert Williams, Isabel Samaras,  Anthony Ausgangi.

Tate Modern
This video talks about the Tate brand, created in 2000 by Wolff Olins. The video seeks to understand how the institution has become one of the most successful modern art museums in the world. Brian and Marina, along with Sir Nicholas Serota, and artists Tracey Emin, Grayson Perry and Rachel Whiteread explain to art critic Matt Collings how the organization set about realizing its ambition to revolutionize the way people perceive art.

An Acquiring Mind
The video talks about Philippe de Montebello, who worked for 31 years as Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. He guided the acquisition of more than 84,000 works of art, demanded innovation in conservation techniques, and oversaw the doubling of the physical size of this cultural institution.

Yes they relate to the project because some talk about museums and different works of art.
I thought the videos were interesting and provided new insight.

Uncertainty Modernity and Art
Modern art in the 20th century portrays chaos and uncertainty. In this video it talks about the works of Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian and Le Corbusier.  It shows how modern art with modern life changed first with the rise of Abstract Expressionism, then with Pop Art. It also tells how the Nazis tried to eliminate modern art with some ideas of their own.

Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art
Abstract Expressionism was made from mixing American art and European art. It was rejected for its nonfigurative and strange character in favor of Pop Art. Pop art presented a challenge to traditions of fine art by including imagery from popular culture such as advertising, news, etc...

I chose these videos because they seemed the most interesting to me. They were interesting and provided me with new insight into these different types of art.

The Mystical North
This video talks about the art and social turmoil that Spain endured during the 20th century. There was alot of tyranny going on during this time and freedom of expression was not allowed. Spanish artists who continued to create their work risked getting themselves into trouble.  Present Spanish artists and architects like Santiago Calatrava are also talked about.

Impact of Cubism

According to the video Cubism was influenced by the works of Cezanne, African tribal art, and the art of the Iberian peninsula. Cubism was the most influential style of art in the early 20th century It provided artists with a new never seen before way to show space and form.

Art Visit 2

Step 1
David Adamo Exhibition

Gallery for small sculpture
Step2
The lighting was not extremely bright but enough to light the whole room and everything in it especially the sculptures.
The walls were white and grey stone with pillars running throughout and stone floors. Movement through the space a good and easy as there is lots of room.
Step 3
The artwork was just placed on the ground toward the center of the room.  All of the sculptures appear to be made of the same type of wood and chiseled the same way. The artworks were carved into different shapes and sizes. The art work is placed a couple feet from each other.

Red Cedar (wood)
The artist carved and chiseled away the wood to create this piece. I do not see any direct meaning to it as it is an odd shape.

Red Cedar
Again he chiseled away unwanted wood the create the  shape desired. The sculpture is a spiral shape and almost looks like at some point it was one whole tree.

David Adamo
Untitled
Red Cedar
This piece looks as if termites or beavers were the ones who carved it. Again I don't see a direct meaning but is very interesting. The way this artists carves the wood makes it look as if it is natural even though it is not.

Mask Making

I thought the finished mask came out better than I expected. I like the different colors i chose. The mask is suppose to resemble a deer. I wasn't trying to replicate a deer exactly. I think it came out pretty good.

This mask gave some ideas for colors and shape of the mask.
This mask gave me ideas on the shape and size of the nose as well as the shape of the mask. Also influenced how I made the eyes.
This mask gave me ideas on the overall shape of the mask.

African Art
This video talks about the symbolism, aesthetics, and functionality of African art through the region's sculpture, masks, architecture, ornaments, clothing, and utensils.  African religious beliefs are explored through rituals a spiritual form of performance art.  Prehistoric rock art is also presented.

African Art Legacy of Oppression
Belgium's Tervuren Museum contains the world's largest collection of Central African art, which consists of around 250,000 pieces. The video discusses this collection. In the Congo region, there are more than 250 different cultures, so there is a huge range of artistic styles.  Belgium's King Leopold II colonized and brutally exploited this territory during the late 1800s.

I picked these videos because they seemed interesting. I thought the videos went into good detail and were interesting. They talk about some of the same things in the text but provide more of a visual then the text can provide.

More Human Than Human:  This video explained how different cultures illustrate human form in different ways.  Sometimes artists will exaggerate different parts of the body to show its importance.  Some cultures also strived for perfection in creating the human form while others show a more distorted image.

The Black Death:  This video explained about how devestating the black death was in Sienna and Florence.  Many works of art went unfinished because of this.  People became much more interested in the devine world. A new spiritual upbringing would pave the way for high renaissance.

These films were interesting and went into good detail about the different topics.  I chose the black death video because it seemed interesting.

Prairie Style- This video talks about Frank Lloyd Wright and the type of architecture he used in designing homes called prairie style. Prairie style uses parallel lines and low pitched over hanging roofs.  He used open floor plans as well.

Architecture: The Science of Design- This video talks about the many different factors that come into play in architecture.  There are many things that you have to pay attention to when designing and building structures especially skyscrapers. The weather, what is inside and what the building will be used for are all things that determine the design.  It also talks about all the technology that goes into buildings and homes.  Many things can be controlled electronically.

Both the videos and the text showed various different forms of architecture. The videos were able to show more visual details. The reason for choosing these two videos was because they were the first ones listed.

In the sculptor video it explained the many different processes that sculptor go through in order to create what they do. There are many different materials they can use to make their sculptures.  Certain materials can serve certain purposes that the sculpture may be used.
In the glass and ceramics video it talked about the process on how glass is made and its uses in the world around us.  There are many different steps in creating glass starting with silica sand. Ceramics are made mainly through the heating of clay.  Glass is used in many different things around us.
The book explained the processes as well but there is only so much you can do in a book. The videos did what the book couldn't and showed us the processes.

For the most part the images used in the elements and principles project were very good.  There were many different examples used to represent them all.

One painting that was used that was the same as one I used was The Marina Piccola.  The reason we used it was the same. One painting someone used that interested me was called The Cliffs of Greville.  It was a landscape like many of the pictures I used and I love the outdoors.

I thought reading my peers reflections was very helpful. It gives you different points of view and ideas that I may not have thought of.

Art Museum

1.  Albert Bierstadt's painting called The Marina Piccola is my favorite work in the museum.  I really like the way the sun shines off the water as well as the setting. It is on a beach with some rock cliffs on the side.

Another painting that had an impression on me was James Hart's Catskill Creek.  It shows a small creek running through the woods.  I love the outdoors and being in the woods.  The outdoors have been a huge part of my life.

2. One work I felt a connection with was called Cory Arcangel.  It is a picture of a MIG 29 fighter jet.  I have always been very interested in planes especially fighter jets. Whenever there are airshows I always go.

Another work I felt a connection with was Robert Bakewells's Niagara Falls.  I live not even 10 minutes from the falls. I spend alot of time in the Niagara River fishing and jet skiing.  This painting connects with me in many ways.

3. One work I would like to know more about is The Shipwreck by Jean Henry d' Arles.  I thought this was an interesting painting.  It depicts a wrecked ship on some rocks in a bad storm.  I would like to more about the ship that wrecked and maybe the people who were on it. Did they get caught in the storm?

I would also like to know more about Claude Monet's Chemin de Halage a Argenteuil. It is an interesting painting. I would like to know what place is depicted and why he did.

Color Wheel and Value Scale

1. Creating the color wheel and value scale was interesting. It was easier than i thought.
2. I liked working with the paint the best. I don't mind painting and it can be enjoyable for me.
3. Different colors can have a direct effect on the way someone views a work of art as well as the way they feel.

Mod 3

1. The color that we actually perceive an object to be is based on the light the object absorbs or reflects.  We don't see things we see light. Color can have many different effects on emotion.  Usually light and subtle colors like light blue have a much more relaxed and laid back mood.  Harsh colors like red and black have a more dark or angry mood.  People alot of times associate colors directly with moods as well.  If someone says they are "blue" they mean they are sad.

2. The theoretical aspect of color that interests me the most is the effect colors can have on emotions.  Sometimes we may not even realize it but the colors we see around us can influence how we feel at that time.  When we view different works of art the artist can use color to influence the mood he/she wants us to experience while viewing the work.

3.Color can have such a huge role on the way people look at a certain work of art.  Very subtle changes can have a huge impact on the art work.  However it is one of the most useful tools for artists.

4.That certain colors can have a direct effect on the way you feel.

PROJECT 1

http://s1300.photobucket.com/user/wschia04/library/Project%201%20Elements%20and%20Principles

For the most part finding images that represent the different elements and principals was easy.  The elements were much easier than the principals the easiest being line, shape, value and texture.  Finding things to represent unity and emphasis were the most difficult for me.  Doing this project has helped better identify the different elements and principals.  Anything we look at has some type of element or principal.

Module 2

1. Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts- Most art is a representation of something.  They also talked alot about beauty in art and how it relates to aesthetics.

CARTA- Everyone views art in different ways.  A work of art I think is nice you might think is ugly.  There are many different influences as well that can effect how someone views art including culture.  The brain responds to art in different ways and things in art can help influence that as well.

CNN Article- This article talks about how our brain picks out certain things in art like faces or lines.  Artists create illusions in art that aren't actually but make it seem more real.  Our minds know right away whether a work of art is clear representation of everyday life.  There are many different tricks artists use a well to try and trick your brain into seeing certain things.

2. Plato 4th century B.C- he said that we see the perfect idea of what things are suppose to be.  He said all things are beautiful and what we consider beautiful are based on our senses.

3. Changeux- First he explained how art has changed and evolved over time and that many different symbols and elements have been added.  The way someone views a work of art an show alot about them.  The way they see and interpret something shows how they think and view different things.  The aesthetics of art have a huge influence on the way we can see a work.
Ramachandran- Art can stimulate different parts of the brain.  The way someone views a work of art relates to how they might think.  But it can also open up different ways of thinking in a way you might not normally think.

4. They all reference to the idea that the brain picks out certain things in art and how it influences how we may view a work of art. Also how it can show alot about us but at the same time open up new ideas and views.

5. I thought they were interesting because I never really thought about it on the level of how our brain functions and how it can influence us to see certain things.  It can also tell alot about us and it shows that no one is the same because we all think differently and there are many different ways one work of art can be viewed.

Module 1

1. Creating the gmail account and blog was not difficult.  It walked you through the process and I was able to do it quickly.

2. I expect to learn about different types of art and the qualities they each have. Also about different artists and the impact they had on art.

3. I have never taken an online course before and this is all new to me.  I feel confident however that I will be able to do well in the course.
